First-order strong-field QED processes in a tightly focused laser beam

چکیده
In a previous article [Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 213201 (2016)] we have determined the angular resolved and the total energy spectrum of a positron produced via nonlinear Breit-Wheeler pair production by a high-energy photon counterpropagating with respect to a tightly focused laser beam. Here, we first generalize the results in that article by including the possibility that the incoming photon is not exactly counterpropagating with respect to the laser field. As main focus of the present paper, we determine the photon angular resolved and total energy spectrum for the related process of nonlinear Compton scattering by an electron impinging into a tightly focused laser beam. Analytical integral expressions are obtained under the realistic assumption that the energy of the incoming electron is the largest dynamical energy of the problem and that the electron is initially almost counterpropagating with respect to the laser field. The crossing symmetry relation between the two processes in a tightly focused laser beam is also elucidated.

Ultrarelativistic electron states in a general background electromagnetic field.
The feasibility of obtaining exact analytical results in the realm of QED in the presence of a background electromagnetic field is almost exclusively limited to a few tractable cases, where the Dirac equation in the corresponding background field can be solved analytically. This circumstance has restricted, in particular, the theoretical analysis of QED processes in intense laser fields to with...
متن کاملUltrashort, Strongly Focused Laser Pulses in Free Space
Technological advances in ultrafast optics now allow the generation of laser pulses whose duration is as short as a few optical cycles of the electric field; furthermore, these pulses can be focused to a spot size comparable to the wavelength. These strongly focused, ultrashort laser pulses have found applications, for instance, in high-resolution microscopy, particle trapping and electron acce...
متن کاملWakefields Generated by a Tightly Focused Laser Beam
Wakefields generated by a tightly focused laser beam (w0 λp ≡ 2πc/ωp) are characterized by a region of total electron cavitation near the head of the laser pulse, followed by a highly localized region of high electron density. The accelerating field maximizes at a spot size significantly less than λp. The focusing fields are generally larger than the accelerating field, and exhibit complex phas...

Due to sensitive and important applications of free-electron laser in industry and medicine, improvement of the power and efficiency of laser has always been emphasized. Therefore, understanding the created field and examining the properties of the field in waveguides with different shapes and studying the sustainability of electrons movement are particularly important. In this study, the beh...
متن کاملElectron laser acceleration in vacuum: is the Gaussian beam description adequate?
Numerical solutions, to the fully relativistic equations of motion of a single electron injected sideways into the focal point of a tightly-focused laser beam, show that accurate electron energy gain calculations require that terms of order ε and higher, where ε is the diffraction angle, ought to be included in the description of the fields of a Gaussian beam focused down to a 5 μm waist radius...
